Continuing my investigation of trines and sextiles (and particularly how they effect us by transit), here is a personal account of what happened to me when transiting Uranus came into a trine with my natal Venus.
I own a significant amount of glass-blown jewelry made to resemble various sea animals –a turtle ring, mermaids in all shapes and forms, octopus pendants, starfish, jellyfish and seahorses.
One day, one by one, my glass-blown jewelry started to break.
First it was my prized octopus pendant –which seemed to shatter by merely glancing at it. Then it was my turtle ring, which flew off my finger when I was changing, and then suddenly my mermaid earrings started to break, silver chains were snapping in two… and so it went on until all (yes, all, my jewelry –even the non-glass variety –was broken).
What was happening?
The sheer number of these incidences could not be written off as mere coincidence –or could they?
consulted my birth chart to find out…
Transiting Uranus in Aries trine Venus in Sagittarius
Transiting Uranus in Aries had been moving towards a trine with my natal Venus in Sagittarius for a while now but I was so preoccupied at dissecting and overthinking hard-aspect transits that I completely overlooked the soft aspects.
A few years earlier I had experienced transiting Uranus trine natal Uranus and the result was that almost every electronic device I owned either blew up or short-circuited for no apparent reason.
This is because Uranus trine Uranus famously ushers in a time when many people experience malfunctioning electronic equipment.
The explosive energy of Uranus was now channeling itself into my jewelry because it was coming into a trine with Venus (Venus rules adornment and ornamentation).
Transits involving Uranus are known to bring sudden, unexpected changes that alter the nature of reality forever.
Uranian energy disrupts the status quo, tearing down outworn structures and replacing them with new ones.
Anything that has become too humdrum, too conventional or too rigid is swept away in the spirit of (r)evolution.
Astrological Venus, on the other hand, symbolises our values, self-worth and individual tastes. She also symbolises that which brings us lasting satisfaction, pleasure and joy.
Astrologically, Venus defines what we love and what we find beautiful (our aesthetic choices). She also shows how we adorn and ornament ourselves and therefore reflects our dress sense and our personal style.
The trine from transiting Uranus (changing the structure of reality) to Venus (adornment) was clearly what was responsible for permanently alerting the structure of my jewelry.
But it wasn’t just my jewelry that was affected.
Other things were starting to shift too…
Bra-Burning in the New Millennium
I was once a faithful devotee of the almighty push-up bra –the kind that hug and tug at your breasts until they look like giant Christmas ornaments. There was nothing I loved more than wearing a beautiful, well-structured bra even if it meant that my shoulder blades hurt, I was uncomfortable and I struggled to breathe.
Around the time that transiting Uranus in Aries was moving into a trine with my natal Venus in Sagittarius, it was becoming clear to me that having breasts that looked like pimped up water balloons was no longer working for me –in fact, it was making me plain miserable.
Being a victim of colossal straps and pain-inducing underwiring had quickly reached its sell by date and it was clear that reactionary, bra-burning Uranus was cajoling fashion-conscious Venus into an entirely new and liberated style direction.
A few days after the Uranus-Venus trine became exact, off came the bra.
Overnight I’d swapped my harness-bras for silicone nipple covers and I let my breasts go free for the first time in my life.
It was so liberating.
What’s more is that just after I’d made the decision to go braless I happened to find an article written about a study conducted by Jean-Denis Rouillon, a sports medicine specialist, that concluded, after 15 years of research, that bras do not actually prevent breasts from sagging and may actually increase it over time.
Bras were merely invented for modesty and became a “false necessity” that no one had thought to question until the study came out.
Although we are a long way away from all going braless, things look like they are slowly heading in that direction with more and more celebrities speaking out against bras and annual bra sales gradually decreasing.
So here I was, rejecting cultural standards of fashion for a progressive “breathe-easy” new look that is slowly gaining momentum on a collective level (Uranian energy, after all, deals with collective issues).
Although going braless is still considered a little too “far out” (Uranus) to be adopted on a mass scale, my Uranus-Venus wouldn’t have it any other way!
Uranus trine Venus: Internet Friendships
Amidst the debris of broken jewelry and the ashes of old bras I started to receive very bizarre yet beautifully written love letters from an acquaintance I’d made at a shamanic healing centre many years earlier.
We’d barely spoken at the time and hadn’t kept in touch and yet here he was, years later, blowing up my inbox with confessions of his all-consuming love for me while also detailing the various experiments he conducted in his parents’ basement (fermenting mushrooms and building flying machines being amongst the more “normal” of his pursuits).
The content of these love letters (Venus) was bizarre (Uranus) to say the least, written in a completely way-out, oddball style that would put any surrealist to shame.
What’s more is, Uranus-Venus rules Internet friendships and the transit bought me my first ever Internet pen pal who I now enjoy receiving e-mails from on a regular basis.
Even more amazing is that my not-so-secret admirer is a true Uranian –an eccentric, misunderstood “mad scientist” type with ideas and interests that are totally out of sync with cultural “norms.”
Pay Attention to ANY Transiting Planet (even if it's only making a So-called "soft aspect"
When a transiting planet forms a soft aspect (trine or sextile) to a natal planet the subtle changes taking place in our inner landscape are often overlooked because many astrologers tend only to concentrate on meatier transits (conjunctions etc). However, if you look beyond the obvious and gaze into the minutiae of everyday life and into the recesses of your soul –you may be surprised by how soft-aspect transits are expressing themselves in the fabric of your life.
Uranus trine Venus Transit: A Style Revolution
With Uranus trining Venus, a personal style revolution was clearly in the air. I no longer accepted the culturally appropriate “Saturnine” standards of fashion for the sake of modesty and socially conditioned normality.
I was setting my own standards –ones that were more aligned with who I had become.
My fashion choices (Venus) reflected a freer, lighter, unrestricted version of myself that no longer cared about what others thought (Uranus).
Uranus trine Venus: Heart of Glass
The Uranus-Venus trine came a few months after a horrible break-up –a break-up to end all break-ups.
After an initial period of Bridget Jones-inspired overeating and crying, I snapped out of my gloom and have since found myself completely repelled by the idea of relationships –I just want everything to be bright, clear and uncomplicated –preferably avoiding anything that involves any sort of “serious” commitment or lots of messy emotions.
As a result of my shifting values I have come into contact with many Uranians during this Uranus-Venus period: conspiracy theorists, scientists, idealists, polygamists, you name it.
Because my understanding of relationships has completely changed, my social circle has become a lot more varied and eccentric and my values and ideals have really broadened and shifted as a result.
Venus represents our values and what Uranus values is freedom, which means I’ve made lots of new friends while keeping well away from any potential romantic encounters. While I’d happily have a fling or two, commitment has become a scary word indeed.
Ebertin said of Uranus-Venus:
“Tendency to be particular and fastidious in the choice of a partner or lover, passing love bonds” and “urge for independence in love.”
Uranus recoils from too many emotions –it is a planet of the mind and spirit, dissociating from the messy world of human interactions and personal feelings.
Uranus-Venus has taught me that it is possible to have friends and dalliances without getting bogged down by too much seriousness.
Final Thoughts of Soft Aspect Transits
If you take the time to study your chart you will notice that a lot of the subtle shifts and changes taking place in your life can be attributed to transiting planets making soft-aspects to your natal planets.
It’s not just the obvious things (conjunctions, oppositions and squares) that transform our lives –the little things count, too!
