It’s useful to think of this line when working with quincunxes:
“When she was good she was very, very good but when she was bad she was horrid.”
So how do you interpret such ambivalent aspects and, more importantly, how do you make them work for you?
Quincunxes (also called inconjuncts) are hard to define because, while they are considered to work “erratically,” they also provide us with all the abundance and “ease” of trines.
This is because they work somewhere between a trine (luck and ease) and an opposition (tension and discord).
In this 12-part series on inconjuncts I’ll take you through each of the 12 possible inconjunct combinations, starting with the Aries-Virgo inconjunct.
Before I get started, here is a list of all the possible inconjunct combinations:
Aries and Virgo
Key concepts that link Aries and Virgo Archetypal Energy:
Timing and laws (Virgo and Aries), Fathers (Aries) and Mothers (Virgo), implementation, “doers”, hard work, heart chakra (Virgo) and solar plexus chakra (Aries). Overthrowing an old regime (Aries), obeying Nature and Her laws (Virgo), Male procreative power (Aries), the secrets of our inner life (Virgo), acting according to the dictates of our own Nature (Virgo), the interconnectedness of life –everything has a time and a place and its own intrinsic logic (Virgo), inheritance (Aries), transgression (Aries), mental impulses and grand ideas (Aries), sparks (Aries), equilibrium (Virgo), alchemical marriage between what’s inside and what’s outside (Virgo), subjective experience (both signs).
Walking to the Beat of Your Own Drum
The “karma” that unites these two signs is learning how to “walk to the beat of their own drums.” In Aries, the individual is learning how to implement a new spiritual vision to replace the antiquated mores of its predecessors while in Virgo, the individual is learning about the laws of their own nature.
In Aries, the individual must fight (and destroy) an old ruling system that no longer provides spiritual nourishment to its people, while implementing a new vision and a fresh start.
In Virgo, the individual must learn to listen to the dictates of its own, unique nature, without borrowing “acceptable” modes of behaviour from the surrounding collective.
Aries and Virgo = subjective rather than objective experience.
From Aries-Virgo the individual is learning how to master the world of subjective experience in all its different guises.
Since Aries and Libra form the first opposition in the Zodiac, the signs that go from Libra-Pisces indicate a move away from subjective experience to objective experience starting with Libra and the weighing of opposites.
Aries and Virgo in Medical and Esoteric Astrology
In Medical Astrology Aries rules the head, brain and eyes. The esoteric ruler of Aries is Mercury, god of speech and communication.
Aries is known as “the birthplace of divine ideas,” in esoteric astrology because, as the kick-starter of the Zodiac, it is responsible for breaksing away from the regressive pull of the past.
Ideas and inspirations must always precede action and the horns of the ram (Aries’ astral emblem) link it to higher levels of awareness and higher consciousness.
In Medical Astrology Virgo rules the digestive system, spleen and intestines. The esoteric ruler of Virgo is the Moon, which governs our physical bodies and emotional and security needs.
(Side note: our physical well-being is intimately connected with our emotional natures and if we try and “trick” ourselves into doing something that is fundamentally opposed to who we are, the body and/or mind becomes sick).
This is why Virgo is traditionally known as the sign of health, sickness and healing.
“The mind thinks, the body knows,” as the saying goes.
Its astral emblem, the virginal goddess of the grain, link Virgo to Nature and Goddess worship and Mother Nature can be even more of a hell-raiser than fiery, head-strong Aries. If She feels like she is being disrespected and that Her laws are being ignored, Mother Nature is capable of destroying everything in its wake.
Therefore the Virgo archetype is connected with finding out who we are and working with the laws of our natures rather than trying to “trick it” and pretending that we are something we’re not.
Think about the saying:
“Mother knows best” (Moon = Mother)
The intestines sift through and remove that which is not useful for the well-being of the organism –it removes that which does not serve our physical (and therefore mental, spiritual and emotional well-being).
It “separates the wheat from the chaff,” so to speak. (Virgo= grain (wheat), harvest etc).
Virgo is known as “the sign of service” because in serving our own unique natures we ultimately benefit the Whole. One diseased cell has a way of infecting surrounding healthy cells.
Living in accordance to your own nature has a knock on effect for every facet of experience –including the experience of others.
So if we look at the sign of Virgo in this new light we realise that it is not “others” we serve but rather, our own natures and our own emotional truths. Another way of looking at this is by saying that our natures enslave us. You can’t teach a mermaid the splits and you don’t get blueberry juice by squeezing an orange.
This is why Virgo is known as a sign of thrift, caution and constraint.
Virgo is the sign of holistic health and uniting the two brains (the brain in our guts and the brain in our heads). Having two “team players” leads to optimal functioning.
The Aries-Virgo quincunx is about getting the rational mind in our heads “on board” with the visceral reality of the “mind” in our guts. This is so the two may form a cohesive whole rather than two opposing forces that work at cross-purposes.
Therefore uniting the head (brain) with the gut can be seen as the primary objective for those of you who have any inconjuncts between Aries and Virgo in your natal charts.
We have a choice: either we can think dependently, borrowing outdated mores and ideas from the collective OR we can be brave and use the dynamic force and bravado of Aries with the prudent, self-contained qualities of Virgo to blaze new creative trails.
Technical excellence (Virgo) and originality and panache (Aries) can take your creative endeavours from drab to fabulous.
Issues with Timing
Timing is another important factor in the Virgo-Aries quincunx. While Aries may find it hard to quell its “rebel without a cause” enthusiasm, Virgo is almost obsessive in its methodical, ritualistic approach to life. This is because, to Virgo, there is an intrinsic orderliness in Nature and those who encroach upon this are breakers of Nature’s laws.
To Aries, the time is “now” and this impatience can ultimately cause more setbacks than those they are seeking to eradicate (the tortoise and the hare phenomenon).
Virgo’s dithering tendencies, however, may stifle the original spark, the divinely inspired idea, because of its utopian desire for “perfection.”
Learning to temper Virgo’s precision with Aries’ breadth of scope and vision is key.
The Significance of Astrological Mercury in the Aries-Virgo Quincunx
Mercury is the traditional ruler of Virgo and the esoteric ruler of Aries and is the key that unlocks the successful management of the Aries-Virgo quincunx.
Aries (head, brain, eyes) is the original vision, the ingenious idea. Virgo is the the force that translates this idea into tangible results.
Mercury doesn't just rule the way our mind works and what we think about, it also rules physical dexterity and the way we communicate with others. In the Greek myth, Mercury was a restless, inventive youth who was often bored and would create mischief wherever he went as a way to alleviate his boredom.
He invented musical instruments and was a master communicator, flatterer and thief. To make the most of your Aries-Virgo quincunx, it is important to feed rather than stifle your restless, roguish Aries spirit.
Just make sure that all your ingenious ideas and inventions get translated into physical form lest you incur the wrath of the Virgin Goddess!
