I am entirely indebted to the late Betty Bethards for teaching the world the following dream analysis technique. I have found it invaluable in providing a good, solid structure for dream interpretation and have taught it to many of my clients.
Step One: When. You start off by identifying what the time reference for the dream is (i.e. past, future, present). For example if you are in a house from your childhood you are being shown an old pattern of unresolved behaviour from the past. If you are being shown a house that you are building you are being shown something that pertains to your future.
Step Two: What. Next you look at what the problem is and how it is manifesting itself in your life. So for example, you dream of a house you once lived in as a child and there’s a leaky faucet in the kitchen and no matter what you do you can’t seem to get it to stop leaking. A man and a woman show up but the woman can’t fix the leak. When the man tries, he is successful and the leak is fixed. House = self. House from past = a problem that has its roots in the past. Kitchen =cooking up schemes, making plans, creativity, nourishment. Leak =misspent energy, leaky aura. Water= emotions, emotional energy. Faucet =ability to direct and channel your emotions appropriately. So this dream means that you are dealing with an unresolved problem that has carried itself over from your childhood (and that is now playing itself out in the present) and the problem is manifesting as a tendency to overtax yourself emotionally leading to a loss of self-nourishment, and misspent creative energy.
Step Three: How. The third part of the dream will show you how to resolve the problem in waking life. In the example given, a man shows up and fixes the leaky faucet for you. Whether we are male or female we all have a masculine side and a feminine side and it is the task of a lifetime trying to find a working balance between the two opposing polarities. Men always represent our masculine side: fire, air, hot, light, boundary-making, potency, our ability to define ourselves as individuals, pro-active, assertive, active, expressive, yang etc. So the resolution to the problem is that you must become better at defining your boundaries and taking action by stepping up to meet challenges head on. Your feminine side is overdeveloped at the expense of your underdeveloped masculine side. This is not to say that our feminine sides don’t have their merits, they do! Feminine side= water, earth, cold, moist, dark, germinating, receptivity, compassion, creativity, fertility, harmonising, fluid, empathic, psychic, yin. Our mission in life is to balance the two polarities so that there isn’t just one side of us running the show to the detriment of a secret, unlived side.
